• Phil Mickelson had the New York crowds in rapture with four birdies in his opening seven holes but his round was soured by a bogey, double bogey finish to shoot 70 and finish at even par. The faithful still cheered him off the 18th with vigor and his autograph line was the longest of the day. • World No. 1 and FedExCup leader Jason Day is a collective 9-under on the opening seven holes at Bethpage Black through three rounds but he’s had trouble on 8, 9 and 10. He is 6-over in that stretch. Leader Rickie Fowler is 1-over on 8, 9 and 10 and second placed Patrick Reed is even on the stretch. Day sits four shots back headed to Sunday. • Dustin Johnson, No. 2 in the FedExCup, revealed he’s using a new driver this week after the one he used all season, including for his U.S. Open win, has a couple of cracks in the top of the face. “I'm trying to get used to that.
