The Upshot: How Jim Herman went from planning to Monday qualify to taking the Honda lead:

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. -- Jim Herman was on the fourth tee of The Honda Classic’s Monday qualifier when he learned that he'd gotten into this week's TOUR event. He didn't complete the Monday round after it was made moot, but he is making the most of his Honda opportunity. Herman shot a 5-under 65 Thursday in windy conditions at PGA National’s Champion Course and holds a one-shot lead over Brendan Steele through 18 holes. Herman, who lives about 30 minutes away in Palm City, is making his debut at this event. “It was a little unexpected to get to 5 (under),” Herman said. “I was trying to keep it around par.” Herman earned his TOUR card via last year’s Web.com Tour Finals, but wasn’t high enough in his exemption category to get into The Honda field until tournament week.
