For a guy not far removed from the world No. 1 ranking -- and who might still own the title of best player to never win a major -- Westwood was only a peripheral story coming into this week. But on a day when heavyweights like Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Rory McIlroy failed to summon much magic, Westwood seized an opening. With four straight birdies in windy conditions on the front nine, Westwood's opening 67 put him in sole possession of the lead, and gave him yet another shot to capture the big one. He might not have been much of a story before the tournament. But he is back to being one now.
