Rory McIlroy went on a fact-finding mission to Royal Liverpool a few weeks ago, and what he learned about the course’s pot bunkers is this -- you try to avoid them at all costs. “If you drive into sand at Hoylake, you are hitting out sideways,” McIlroy told reporters before last week’s Scottish Open. This is especially true of those balls that settle right near the bottom of the bunker face. But on occasion, the players will have enough real estate between them and the face to get the ball up and out of the bunker and onto the putting surface - -or fairway.
