Alabama freshman Thomas wins Jones Cup

SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. – Alabama freshman Justin Thomas made birdies on Ocean Forest’s 14th and 15th holes Sunday for a come-from-behind victory at the Jones Cup, one of amateur golf’s most prestigious events. A final-round 69 gave Thomas an even-par 216 total for the tournament, two shots better than UCLA’s Manav Shah. Shah was three shots clear of the field and five shots ahead of Thomas at the start of the day. Shah was two ahead when he made a 6-foot birdie putt on No. 13, but he made double-bogey on the par-3 15th and bogeyed the par-4 16th. He shot 76 to finish at 2-over 218.
